The Book of the Month July 2021 selections are here! Decide which of the five books you want to add to your subscription box.
Book of the Month is my favorite subscription box. Every month, I choose between their five-book selections, and voila! A blue box arrives at my door carrying one (or two or three) new books for me to read.
Every month, I highlight the five books chosen and let you know my thoughts on the chosen titles.
Even if you don’t have a Book of the Month subscription (yet), I think you’ll find value in looking at a curated list of new releases.
Take a look at the five books this month:
- A Perfect Book Club Book About an Irish Family
- An Untold WWII Story about Black Female Officers
- A Thrilling Pandemic Murder Mystery
- A 1990s Young Adult Coming-of-Age Novel
- Two Fathers Set Out to Avenge Their Murdered Sons
Keep scrolling to see all the details about the Book of the Month July 2021 selections and to find out which one I’m adding to my subscription box.
What is Book of the Month?
Book of the Month is a monthly subscription book service highly popular among the book community. Trust me, once you try it, you’ll be hooked.
How it Works
Each month, a panel of judges chooses five books for you to choose from. The Book of the Month selections cover different genres and are always special edition hardcovers. Often, the chosen books haven’t been published yet, so you get to be one of the first people to read them.
At the beginning of the month, you choose one book to add to your box and shortly thereafter the little blue box arrives at your door. If you aren’t loving any of the selected books, you just skip that month and your credits will just roll over to the next month. Or, after your third box, you can choose from five member favorite books for your month’s selection instead.
On the other hand, if you want more than one book, once you’ve chosen your initial book, you can add-on up to two additional books at a discounted rate. These add-ons can be from the current month’s selection, be favorites from previous months, or be new releases specially included in the add-on catalog.
Pricing
Book of the Month runs two different pricing plans. On the monthly plan, you get one credit a month for $15. If you are willing to pay upfront, the yearly plan gives you 12 credits for $150, which averages out to $12.50 a book. For a hardcover new release, both prices are a steal.
Even better, when you include additional books into your box, they are only $10 each!
Book of the Month also offers 3, 6, and 9-month gift cards if you are considering purchasing it as a gift.
For new subscribers, Book of the Month’s homepage almost always has a special offer to get your first book for $10. But I can do you one better. If you are interested in joining, you can use my Book of the Month Club referral link to get your first book for $5 right now!
Bonus Features
But wait, there’s more. Once you’ve chosen your 12th book from Book of the Month, you join the BFF club and get a special Book of the Month tote.
After that, you’ll get a free add-on every year for your birthday month. Plus, when the end of the year rolls around, you get one of the top 5 Book of the Month selections from the year for free. That’s an additional two books each year for no additional cost.
What are you waiting for? Join Book of the Month and get your first book at a discounted price!
July 2021 Book of the Month Selections
We Are the Brennans
Tracey Lange
After a car accident caused by her drunk driving, Sunday Brennan returns to her large Irish family in New York. Five years earlier, she had abandoned them and her high school sweetheart with no explanation. Determined to rebuild her relationships, Sunday is startled when a man threatens the family’s business and forces the family to confront painful mistakes. A five-star read that would be perfect for a book club discussion, We are the Brennans is one of my new favorite books of 2021.
Sisters in Arms
Kaia Alderson
Wanting to help their country during World War II, Grace Steele and Eliza Jones enlist in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) to become one of the first class of women’s officers in the Army. Coming from the North, Grace and Eliza are not used to the segregated military and find they must be better than perfect as the first Black women in the service. Inspired by the true story of the 688th Postal Battalion, Sisters in Arms is the perfect choice for historical fiction lovers.
56 Days
Catherine Ryan Howard
Just as Covid-19 starts cropping up in Ireland, Ciara met Oliver in a supermarket queue. Sparks flew and the two started dating. Tired of the endless scrutiny of her love life from friends and family, Ciara decided to move in with Oliver when Ireland goes into lockdown without telling anyone. When detectives investigate a decomposing body found in Oliver’s apartment, could someone have used the pandemic to commit the perfect crime?
The People We Keep
Allison Larkin
In 1994, high school dropout April sets out on a journey to find herself a better life fighting with her dad in their broken-down motorhome. April ends up in Ithaca, New York, and finds herself drawn to the people at the local coffee shop. Yet, as April begins to feel at home, she worries she will only end up hurting the people to whom she becomes close. A lyrical coming-of-age story that speaks on the importance of found family.
Razorblade Tears
S. A. Cosby
When a gay couple is murdered, their ex-con fathers band together to deal out retribution. Both Ike and Buddy Lee struggled to connect with their gay sons, but they both loved them fiercely. Now the two, one Black and one white, must confront their prejudices about their children and each other as they deal out bloody revenge in Cosby’s latest thriller.
Not Feeling the July Books?
Sometimes, it happens. If none of the five July 2021 Book of the Month selections are calling your name, don’t despair. After your third box, you now have another option!
Previously, if you didn’t love the five choices, you would have to skip the whole month. Now, you can choose a member fave for your monthly box and then add-on up to two more books if you choose.
Member Faves:
July’s New Add-Ons
Recently, Book of the Month has started including a few extra releases on top of their five monthly selections. Once you have picked your main selection, you can choose to add-on one of these new books (or any past release) to your box.
July’s New Books:

My July Picks
I absolutely loved We Are the Brennans, and would have chosen it for my Book of the Month selection if I didn’t already have two copies. I might still upgrade to a hardcover later, but for now, I’ve decided to fill my July box with some books I haven’t read.
When I first heard about Sisters in Arms a month or so back, I was intrigued. However, I was hesitant to pick it up because I’ve been burned by too many subpar World War II books recently. Since Book of the Month is giving it the nod, I think I’ll give it a try.
To fill out my box, I decided to try Allison Larkin’s coming-of-age story. The People We Keep has great reviews on Goodreads, so I have my fingers crossed it will be a good summer read.
After 7 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, I finally decided to snag a copy of The Last Thing He Told Me, Reese Witherspoon’s book club pick for May. I’m not having great luck with thrillers recently and hopefully this book will be just what I’m looking for.

There were so many this month I had a hard time making up my mind! I chose Sisters in Arms and Survive the night. I was very interested in We are the Brennans and Razorblade Tears but I’m committed to ordering no more than 2 choices per month.

I got We Are Brennans and The People We Keep. I am looking forward to this box but I am way behind on my reading pile. LOL! Hoping to catch up soon. Like the last poster I am trying to limit to 2 books the last few months but it is hard to pass up getting the third book! I love reading your thoughts on the book reviews and recommendations. Happy Reading!

Just not feeling the BOTM July picks
And I would get The Personal Librarian (GMA book club selection) as an add on, but I do not want any of the “faves” they are offering either.
I am finally a BFF & always enjoy seeing what each month’s selections are. I joined at the start of the pandemic & the introductory $9.99 offer (including shipping I think?) was too good to pass up. My first book was Valentine by Elizabeth Wetmore.
I told myself I would cancel once I got home (I was away for Spring Break & got stuck bc of the pandemic) & back to my local library.
But I am still a member! Now I want to hang in there to get my first birthday book & end of the year BOTY selection.
Then, I may cancel. I am really fortunate to have a great library nearby. They offered curbside service during Covid times & now have reopened their doors. They get books for me faster than I can read them!
Almost ordered We Are The Brennans, but I read the preview/you can do that on BOTM site/and it did not grab me.
I do love Rachael’s insights and seeing what others pick. Always fun.

Now I am considering The People We Meet. As Rachael states, it has good reviews on Good Reads.
I’ll hold back a few days before I decide whether I’ll pass or not.
I was able to get on a wait list at my local library for The Personal Librarian. I am number 8!
Currently trying to finish up When The Stars Go Dark. For whatever reason I am reading it too slowly, although I like it.
I have Great Circle & Olympus, Texas sitting and needing to be read quickly before they are due back at the library. And I have a feeling I will not be allowed to recheck them.
So much TBR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Catherine says
I actually think I will skip this month :/ The only book that speaks to me is the pandemic mystery, but I have such a stack waiting for me that I am looking forward to more!
